BUFORD - An elderly woman and a man were shot and killed early Wednesday morning in what apparently started as a domestic dispute, according to Gwinnett County police.

Authorities said officers were called to a residence in the 6400 block of Old Shadburn Ferry Road in unincorporated Buford at 12:36 a.m. As an officer approached the home on foot, he said he saw a Betty Jo Massengale, 80, walking towards him in the driveway. The officer said that's when Massengale was shot in the back by James Daniel Guler, 73.

When Massengale fell to the ground, the Gwinnett police officer said he fired at Guler. Guler then fell to the ground and fired another shot, according to the officer.

Both Massengale and Guler were killed. At this point, police are unsure if a round fired by the officer killed Guler or if Guler shot himself. Police said the two lived at the residence together, but they were not married.

The officer was not hurt, and he has been placed on administrative leave while the investigation is underway.

The Gwinnett County Police Deadly Force Investigation Team, the Gwinnett County Police Criminal Investigation Division and the District Attorney's Office are investigating.
