SUGAR HILL - A Lanier High School senior has died following a swimming accident this past weekend.

Gwinnett County authorities identified the boy as 17-year-old Jabril Ameer Nowlin. He and a group of friends were swimming at a neighborhood pool Sunday when he was found at the bottom of the pool, according to a report in the Atlanta Journal Constitution

A letter from Principal Kerensa Wing posted on the high school website indicated that grief counselors were on hand at the high school in Sugar Hill all day Thursday to talk with students.

"We know that this may be the first time some of our students may have had to cope with the loss of a classmate or friend. Dealing with death is difficult for all people, and it can be very challenging for teenagers," said Wing in the letter.
