According to Hamrick that change could involve moving passport service back to the downtown post office on Green Street from where it is now at the Limestone office. That would add to traffic troubles.
"There is a possibility that applications for passports could move back to the Green Street location," Hamrick said. "That could increase traffic along Green Street and further complicate traffic congestion there. I have proposed that we meet with the local postal officials to see just exactly what the plans are."
Hamrick added the City still wants to move the post office off Green Street or at least decentralize services.
"This should be a part of the dialog that we have with the post office personnel, just to see if we could further centralize services from Green Street," Hamrick said.
MORE CCA PRISONERS COMING
The Corrections Corporation of America facility, the old Hall County Jail on Main Street in Midtown, is taking on more federal prisoners and that calls for a modification in CCA's agreement with the City of Gainesville.
City Council saw nothing wrong with the request; CCA Senior Director Tommy Alsup explained the U.S. Marshall's Service wants to house prisoners for up to ten days while on their way to serve their sentences.
"That facility will hold about 502 beds so we anticipate another 150 to 200 U.S. Marshal's service folks coming in there," Alsup said. "
The amendment to the city's 14 year agreement with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and CCA adds a year to allow the Marshal's Service to house its prisoners. Alsup said any facility change would be internal, not external.
