Brian Eubanks submitted his resignation earlier in the day. The commission called an emergency afternoon meeting to consider the resignation.
At the same Wednesday meeting, officials named Robert Wilkins interim chief. Wilkins, the county's assistant chief, had just been elevated from part to full-time status by the commission Tuesday night.
The full-time vote came following a 45-minute closed session at the end of the regular commission meeting.
All five commissioners, as well as Eubanks and Wilkins, declined comment following the Wednesday session.
