Big new street signs are going up in Flowery Branch

FLOWERY BRANCH - There's a sign of the times in Flowery Branch or to be more precise, according to City Manager Bill Andrew, the city has decided its time to make it easier to get around town and find locations by erecting larger street signs, much larger, in fact.

"There are two standard sizes for the signs, a six inch and a nine inch, and we decided to go with the nine to be more visible," Andrew said. "The blue color would allow us to have more of an identity with the city's logo. We're going to some effort to put on the logo and identify the city."

According to Andrew Flowery Branch has ordered around six hundred new signs of all kinds and about 200 of them are street signs, but short staffing has resulted in an installation delay. Andrew hopes they will mark city streets by the middle of this month. Andrew added the city plans to order new sign posts. The price tag for everything is around $23,000.

Andrew said the larger signs won't create visibility problems for motorists trying to find their way.

"We follow federal regulations that require certain heights for signs," Andrew said. "The manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices is what it's called; it has heights for signs of this size and we'll be following those heights, I don't think there will be any issues."
