Talmo Road closed after rain, no estimated re-open date

GAINESVILLE - A portion of Talmo Road, resting on the Hall and Jackson County line, will be closed until further notice.

Heavy rainfall yesterday destroyed part of the road, making it unsafe to drive. Unlike a typical washout, however, the rain destroyed the bottom of a structural pipe, causing it to collapse.

"Basically we have a large structural metal plate-type pipe under Talmo Road that is in a state of failure," said Hall County PE County Engineer Kevin McInturff.

"We had a large rain and the water was working itself underneath this structural plate pipe, and the bottom has failed on it. The lower end slope on the downstream side has started to fail and that's resulting in a portion of the road collapsing."

The road has been closed by authorities and contractors are on scene, estimating repairs. Detours are already in place for commuters.

The affected area is in between the two entrances of Ed Cobb Road.
