CLAYTON - Rabun County Sheriff Frank Andrews says his office has turned over a domestic violence investigation to the GBI.

Andrews said the sheriff's office, GBI and Clayton Police Department responded to a domestic violence incident involving injuries over the weekend.

"The GBI was requested to assist the Rabun County Sheriff's Office with an aggravated assault investigation on Sunday, July 28, at approximately 9 p.m.," said GBI Special Agent in Charge Kimberly Williams. "The incident location was 345 Brewer Hill Lane, Clayton."

Williams said two people were injured during the incident.

James Dale Smith, 51, was airlifted to Mission Medical Center in Asheville.

"Smith is still at Mission Medical in serious but stable condition," Williams said Tuesday afternoon.

The other victim, 31-year-old Courtney Garcia, was taken to Mountain Lakes Medical Center in Clayton for treatment.

"Other people were present and involved in the incident," Williams said. "The investigation is ongoing at this time."
