1st Gainesville black commissioned by U.S. Army dies

HAMPTON, Va. - The first African-American from Gainesville to receive a U.S. Army commission has died.

Col. (Ret.) Maynard Brown, Jr., 76, of Hampton, Virginia, died at the North Hampton Rehab Center in Hampton.

Col. Brown served in the Army from 1960 until his retirement at Fort Monroe, Virginia, in 1977.

Graveside services will be held at Memorial Park Cemetery in Gainesville Tuesday, July 30, at 11:00.
