WASHINGTON, D.C. - U.S. Rep. Doug Collins of Gainesville, founder of the Army Corps of Engineers Reform Caucus, Wednesday introduced the "Marina Operator Tax Obligation Relief (MOTOR) Act of 2013" (H.R 2795). The 9th District Republican said the bill is designed to provide economic relief to lake communities by capping fees marinas operating on Corps lakes are forced to pay.

Collins said the Corps has established arbitrary fees on all restaurant, gasoline, and marine engine sales at marinas operating on Corps lakes. Presently, Georgia districts charge upwards of 4.6% on all gross sales, he added. The MOTOR Act establishes a nationwide standard to lower this rate to 1% on specific services for all marina facilities in Corps-regulated areas. Collins also announced two upcoming events on the shores of Lake Lanier where he will meet with his constituents to discuss the value of this bill to Lake Lanier and Lake Hartwell, both located in the 9th District.

"Anytime we can take a common sense philosophy and turn it into a reality, it's a win for hardworking taxpayers," said Collins. "This bill is about jobs, and 4.6% in subjective fees can be the difference in a Georgia-owned business staying open or closing. We've got to find smart solutions to give business owners the economic relief they desperately need, and ensuring that marinas of all sizes are subject to the same fee structure is one way we can do that."

"I grew up on the lake, my kids have grown up on the lake, and I believe every American should be able to enjoy the natural beauty these freshwater bodies have to offer. The MOTOR Act creates an economic environment around our lakes that will protect American businesses and continue providing those types of opportunities for families."

Collins scheduled a roll out and discussion of the bill for Friday:
