SUGAR HILL - Groundbreaking was held Friday morning for the widening of a section of Georgia Highway 20 in Forsyth and Gwinnett counties.

The ceremony was held at Sugar Hill Church on Brogden Boulevard/Ga. 20 in Sugar Hill.

The long-planned project calls for widening the remaining 4.5 miles of Ga. 20 in Gwinnett County into Forsyth. The work will complete the widening of the highway to four lanes throughout Gwinnett, all the way from Loganville and Walton County to Sugar Hill and across the Chattahoochee River to Forsyth County. Gwinnett County will manage the 4.5 miles leading up to the bridge, and the Georgia Department of Transportation (DOT) will oversee construction of two new two-lane bridges over the Chattahoochee River into Forsyth.

Gwinnett's Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (SPLOST) program will provide abouT $7 million in funding for a portion of the engineering, right-of-way and construction phases of work. State and federal governments are providing $85 million for the bridge and roadway projects. State funds came from the Georgia Regional Transportation Authority (GRTA) and Georgia DOT.
