The chief of staff for Democratic Rep. David Scott says the congressman made the remark during an interview with an Atlanta television station on Thursday.
An Inspector General's audit in mid-April said one patient in need of mental health care committed suicide, and two others who needed care died of drug overdoses. Another veteran being treated for depression and anxiety committed suicide after being discharged last year.
Scott says that the deaths should serve as a warning and that Veterans Affairs is in need of a change in leadership.
A call and email to the VA press office was not immediately returned.
