CLEVELAND - A White County Detention Center inmate remains hospitalized after apparently attempting to hang himself Tuesday night.

White County Chief Deputy Bob Ingram said Jason Grimsley, 31, of Cleveland, attempted to hang himself in a jail cell.

Ingram said Grimsley was accounted for at 6:18 p.m., and was discovered missing during a head count at 6:36 p.m.

Grimsley was taken by ambulance to Northeast Georgia Medical Center, where Ingram said he remains unconscious, in critical condition.

According to Ingram, Grimsley was jailed on some theft and probation charges.

There was no indication from Grimsley about this action, Ingram said.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation will be conducting an independent investigation.
