LAWRENCEVILLE - The family of park ranger D.P. Wright has issued a thank you statement to the authorities who aided him after he was accidentally shot last Wednesday.

The statement expressed the family's gratitude and also gave an update on the ranger's condition. The full statement is below.

"Ranger Wright and his family wish to express their extreme gratitude to those that responded to the incident of Wednesday evening; the Gwinnett County Police Department, paramedics and first responders, and the citizens who stopped and provided assistance. They are also overwhelmed with the number of messages they are receiving communicating concern, blessings, and wishes for a full recovery.

Ranger Wright is doing well in his recovery and expects to be discharged from the hospital sometime this week. Although additional recovery time will be needed at home, he looks forward to returning to the job he loves and particularly interacting and teaching children about water safety. As he is recovering, he often speaks of the joy it brings him to make a difference in these youngsters' lives as he teaches them how to be safe around the water.

The family wishes to express their thanks and requests the media to allow them privacy for rest and recovery time."

Evidence suggests that Wright, a federal park ranger, was struck with a bullet by mistake. Wright was making the rounds at the Buford Dam Park around 10 pm and saw a car with a person inside. He went to tell the passenger, 34 year old Qiana Moore, that the park was closed.

Instead, Wright was struck in the abdomen with a bullet. He was able to get away to a roadway and a passing driver stopped and called 911. Investigators found Moore dead in her vehicle afterwards, from what appeared to be a self-inflicted gun shot wound.

Authorities have determined the shooting of Wright was accidental after finding only one shell casing and statements saying only one gun shot was heard.
