CLEVELAND - The White County Historical Society has planned a reunion for employees of a couple of pioneering manufacturing operations in the county.

Both businesses are no longer in operation, but historical society officials are asking all former employees of Wilco Hosiery Mill and Orbit Manufacturing Co. of Helen to gather for a time of remembrance.

Janet Cox, historical society member and event coordinator said, the reunion will be held from 2-4 p.m. Saturday, June 8, at the historic courthouse on the Cleveland Square.

The Helen Hosiery Mill began production of wool and cashmere argyle socks in 1946. It later became Wilco Hosiery and operated for 12 years by owner Jimmy Wilkins.

In 1962, Wilkins started Orbit Manufacturing, which produced ladies' apparel. At its peak, Orbit operated 10 sewing plants in the northeast Georgia area. That operation closed in 1996.

"All employees are urged to attend and enjoy the fellowship," Cox said.
