ATLANTA (AP) A faculty group at Emory University plans a vote on whether they think the school president is able to provide effective leadership after a controversial essay he wrote.

Faculty members in Emory's College of Arts and Sciences will begin voting Monday. If a majority vote "no confidence" in President James Wagner, it would send the message that they no longer think he should lead the school.

In the winter edition of Emory Magazine, Wagner used the 1787 three-fifths compromise on slavery to make a point about finding common ground in politics.

Wagner later apologized, saying he considered slavery heinous and inhuman and that he should have stated that clearly.

Wagner's job status is decided by Emory's board of trustees, which has expressed support for him.
