Beginning in April, officials say visitors to boat ramps, picnic areas and trails will be asked to bring their own trash bags and take their garbage with them out of the park.
Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area Superintendent Patty Wissinger says the move is a response to automatic federal spending cuts. Officials say trash cans will be removed from most park locations.
Wissinger says the park has hundreds of trash cans scattered across 48 miles and emptying them accounts for a large part of the park's maintenance costs. Wissinger says the cost savings will help the park get closer to meeting a federally mandated budget cut.
