An officer who answered the phone Tuesday morning could not say how the animal arrived at the facility, however.
The dog, described as a pit bull, is believed to be the animal that bit a 6-year-old Gainesville boy in the face Saturday.
The boy's mother Michelle Lane told Fox 5 News that she and her son were in PetSmart on Saturday. She petted the dog first and it seemed friendly, but when her son David reached to pet the animal, it lunged and bit him in the face. David has nine stitches on his nose as a result.
Gainesville police said a witness who tried to stop the dog owners as they left the store told authorities one of the men pulled a gun and threatened the witness before they drove away.
At last report, police were still looking for a red Chevrolet pick-up truck with Georgia license plate ATW0455. They said the truck was licensed out of Forsyth County.
Gainesville Police Department spokesman Kevin Holbrook said Tuesday police investigators are handling the threat report involving the dog owners, while Hall County Animal Control will handle the bite case involving the child.
Michelle Lane told the TV station she wants to make sure the dog has been updated on all of its vaccines, including its rabies shot.
