As the new Youth of the Year for Boys & Girls Clubs of Hall County, Moss, 17, is the recipient of the highest honor a Boys & Girls Club member can receive. Youth of the Year recognizes outstanding contributions to a member's family, school, community and Boys & Girls Club, as well as overcoming personal challenges and obstacles. Youth of the Year encourages Club members to reach their full potential by achieving academic success, leading healthy lifestyles and contributing to their communities. Youth of the Year honorees are shining examples and living proof that great futures start at Boys & Girls Clubs.
"Donavan is a star, a great leader and an excellent example of the impact that Boys & Girls Clubs have on the youth we serve," said Steven Mickens, chief professional officer, Boys & Girls Clubs of Hall County.
Raised by his mom, a single parent, Moss learned at an early age that he would need to grow up fast and work hard to accomplish his dreams. The oldest of three he knew it was up to him to set the example for his younger siblings and to help his struggling mom provide for the basics in life.
He has been a Club member since elementary school and has always shown a special interest in the sports programs offered through the Clubs. In addition to athletics he was also involved with the academic and character development programs such as Passport to Manhood, a program for young men that teaches responsibility, and college preparation/tours.
Moss believes that it is important to give back and serve others in his community. In doing so, he is very active in his church and serves as a bible study counselor. He has also organized a youth volunteer group to help with Good News at Noon Homeless shelter. He feels that working and being involved with people from all backgrounds within his community has helped mold his character and leadership skills.
Moss is a senior at Gainesville High School where he serves as Class President (freshman, sophomore and junior years) and Student Council representative as a senior. He has been an honor student throughout high school taking four Advanced Placement classes and twelve Honor classes. He is a member of the Beta and Key clubs, and National High School Honor Society. He also plays football and is the co-captain of the Lacrosse Team. After graduation Donavan plans on attending the Air Force Academy where he can pursue his passion for aeronautical engineering. Post college plans are to join the Air Force where he hopes to fly the F-22 fighter jet.
"The Boys & Girls Clubs of Hall County helped me early on to get through struggles in life," Moss said. " They planted a seed that not only pulled me out of my 'cocoon' but would have a lasting and legendary effect on my life. The Club taught me how to be a man, how to walk with confidence
