WINDER - A Winder teenager has been arrested and charged with stabbing his brother at a family gathering.

Winder Police Officer Chris Cooper said the 16-year-old stabbed his 21-year-old brother Sunday afternoon at a home in the 200 block of Russell Road after the two began to argue.

"No other family members were around," said Cooper. "It wasn't known what had occurred until the 21-year-old went outside to get his father."

Cooper said the victim was stabbed in the stomach, apparently with a knife the juvenile had taken from the kitchen of the home. The victim underwent surgery and is expected to recover from his wounds.

The teen has been charged with aggravated assault in Barrow County's juvenile court system.

"In this case, it's not up to the family to determine if they want to press charges or not. Once we get there and determine that an act of violence has occurred in a domestic situation, then we're obligated to act by law," said Cooper.

Cooper said he did not know if the teen remained in jail.
