Meanwhile, high winds combined with saturated ground threatened to topple trees in central and northern Georgia. Several counties in the state, including Forsyth, Gilmer, Gwinnett and Pickins in northeast Georgia, were placed on alert for strong, gusty winds. (See link below for full details.) The top wind gust Tuesday as of 8:15 at Lee Gilmer Memorial Airport in Gainesville was 30 miles-an-hour and downed trees were blocking a couple of roads in Banks County early Tuesday.
The National Weather Service (NWS) said a flood warning covering much of central and southern Georgia would continue until Tuesday afternoon. The Moultrie Observer reported Monday that nearly 90 roads in Colquitt County had water over them and that in the city of Moultrie all or parts of seven streets had been closed because of flooding. Colquitt County school officials announced Monday that schools would be closed Tuesday. It was much the same story in other places in south Georgia.
Rain, heavy at times, was also falling across parts of north Georgia. Rainfall at the airport in Gainesville, as of 8:15 Tuesday, totaled 1.15 inches since midnight.
