ACS, NGMC to host kickoff for nationwide cancer prevention study

GAINESVILLE - The American Cancer Society (ACS), in partnership with Northeast Georgia Medical Center (NGMC) are looking for people from Gainesville interested in participating in a nationwide cancer prevention study.

They will host a Cancer Prevention Study-3 (CPS-3) kickoff Tuesday, Feb. 26, to recruit participants in the historic study designed to help researchers better understand the genetic, environmental and lifestyle factors that cause or prevent cancer.

Organizers say participants will receive all the information they need to educate community members about the study and how they can make an appointment to enroll. The goal is to recruit 40 "champions" and enroll at least 400 participants in the Gainesville area.

The kickoff is planned Tuesday, Feb. 26, from 7:30 a.m.-9:00 a.m. and will include a light breakfast.



Scheduled speakers include:

" Emcee: Al Gainey, Talk Radio Host and Franchise Owner, Spherion Corporation

" Todd Sigmon, Executive Director of Oncology at NGMC

" Charles Nash, MD, Oncologist with The Longstreet Clinic and Medical Director of The Cancer Center at NGMC

" Nance Joiner, Cancer Prevention Study 3 Study Coordinator

" Mayor Danny Dunagan, Mayor of the City of Gainesville

" Randal Redner, Vice President of Georgia, American Cancer Society
