GAINESVILLE - The Gainesville High School Robotics Alliance team, which won the Vex Robotics High School competition on Saturday, is seeking sponsors as it prepares to head to the world championship in California in a couple of months.

Businesses and individuals willing to sponsor a team member for the competition, should contact Dave Head ([email protected]) at Gainesville High School.

As AccessNorthGa.com reported Sunday, the team competed with 70 high school teams, and the win qualified the GHS team for the Vex Robotics High School World Championship Competition in Anaheim, Calif., April 18-21.

Gainesville High School's Robotics Alliance is composed of three teams. All teams participated in three rounds of competition. The winning team was composed of students Jakim Johnson and Kevin Ayala, who drove the robot in competition, along with Laramy Head, Liz Fischer, Billy Jackson, and Joshua Robinson. Sponsors and coaches for the team are GHS teachers, Dave Head and Nantheyyen Ramachandran.

Senior Joshua Robinson was the student responsible for starting the Gainesville Robotics Alliance three years ago. He made presentations to local businesses and industry to gather financial support to begin a program. With these funds, Mr. Head and Dr. Ramachandran attended the Georgia Tech CEISMIC Robotics Institute, and started a GHS team in 2011. The Alliance now consists of three competition teams at Gainesville High School and three at Gainesville Middle School. Additionally, all five elementary schools have begun working with LEGO Robotics. Joshua volunteers at Gainesville Exploration Academy to support their beginning team.
