Dr. Merrianne Dyer has told the school board she intends to retire on June 30, 2014.
"When I accepted the position five years ago, I told the board I would be there for four years," said Dyer. "Things happened in 2012 which made it not a very good time to retire, primarily the death of Chris Mance."
Mance was the principal of Gainesville High School who succumbed to cancer at the age of 50 in April 2012.
For the past two weeks, the school board has made a survey available to system employees, school governance councils and members of the Greater Hall Chamber of Commerce, asking what characteristics they want in a new superintendent.
That survey has now been opened to the public and will be available through Friday for completion. The survey is linked to the home page of the Gainesville City Schools web site. (See link below.)
Dyer said while it is a big strange to participate in the search for her successor, it's something she's happy to do.
"It was always the plan and it was always my hope that I would leave [the system] a better place than I found it and pass off the baton of a wonderful school system," said Dyer. "It really is gratifying to know how strong we are and how fortunate the next person will be."
