GAINESVILLE - A new electronic tracking system being used by Gainesville police to help track stolen items has yielded its first arrest.

Earlier this year, the Gainesville Police Department began using LeadsOnline, a electronic reporting system for pawnshops that allows law enforcement to find items that have been reported stolen.

This week authorities arrested Jeremy A. Richie, 35, of Gainesville after he allegedy took a number of items taken in several entering auto cases to area pawnshops and made "merchandise for cash" exchanges. Police said one theft involved a firearm.

All of the cases occurred over the last two months, according to police.

Richie faces the following charges:

5 counts Theft by Receiving Stolen Property
5 counts Theft by Deception
1 Count Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon
Probation Violation Charges

The LeadsOnline pawnshop electronic reporting system is the nation's largest online investigation system for law enforcement, according to a press statement from the Gainesville Police Department, and provides rapid electronic access to transactions from thousands of reporting businesses including scrap metal processors, secondhand stores, Internet drop-off stores and pawn shops across the country.
