School system spokesman Jorge Quintana identified the officer as Rolando Jimenez, an 11-year employee of the school system police force.
Quintana spoke with Fox Five.
"This is not only something unfortunate for his family, but also for his family at work," Quintana said.
Jimenez suffered serious injuries when he was hit by a car while he was directing traffic in front of the school just before 7:00 a.m. Fox Five reported the officer underwent surgery at an area hospital.
"It was a lot of chaos this (Wednesday) morning and we really didn't know the information, but when we found out it was him, a lot of students were upset," Lanier Junior Meg Gregory told Fox 5.
Gwinnett Police Cpl. Edwin Ritter told Atlanta media that a vehicle, driven by 22-year-old Sydney Smigiel of Buford, was traveling southbound on Buford Highway. Ritter said Smigiel refused to obey Officer Jimenez' instructions to slow down. He said the vehicle hit the officer and the struck another vehicle. The second vehicle rolled over Jimenez as he lay on the ground.
Smigiel reportedly was not injured.
Charges are pending against Smigiel, according to Ritter. He said at a minimum, she is facing charges for failing to obey the officers traffic directions.
