The 47 year old man's abandoned boat was found in the Bald Ridge Creek area Monday night.
Divers searched that area of Lake Lanier, but DNR Sgt. Greg Colson told Fox 5 that conditions got worse through the day.
"We sent one set of divers down, and they had some issues. I think three of them had ruptured an eardrum," Colson said.
"They've got a couple different areas they hope, or are thinking where the boat was circling. They're going to keep looking right around there, and the family also gave us some other spots that they knew that he fished around."
Family members told authorities that the man is an experienced boater who knows the lake well.
