Nick Futrell launched Blessings in a Backpack this school year. According to Lambert Principal Gary Davison, Lambert students are free to propose clubs. When Davison heard Futrell's idea, he was on board.
"It's taken off this year and Nick is an outstanding young man who really wants to see this go to the next level."
Futrell raises funds for the work, coordinates food from local supermarkets and organizes the collection and distribution of the backpacks. School officials ssaid it costs $80 a year to provide a pack of food for one child.
Davison said Nick and student volunteers gather every Friday morning to stuff the packs, a process he called incredible. It included about 25 students the last time.
"Early on a Friday morning they clear out a classroom, set up tables around the perimeter and whatever the pack will be that week, they have an entire assembly line program," Davison said.
Davison estimated the effort feeds nearly 100 people a week through eight schools. Parent volunteers gather and distribute the packs to individual schools.
Davison said Futrell hopes to expand the program to all Forsyth County schools next year.
"This is quite an enterprising young man," Davison said.
