Centennial roof and gym floor to get attention

GAINESVILLE - A buckled gym floor and leaky gym roof at Centennial Arts academy will soon get some attention following a vote of the Gainesville School Board Thursday afternoon.

The gym floor is buckled and unusable. While the roof has apparently leaked for a while, maintenance crews were able to keep the floor in use.

Jim Harrison, a PTA member with two children at the school, said his understanding is that a drainage pipe on the roof came apart over Christmas, resulting in the buckled floor.

School officials, addressing several parents and members of the PTA and school governance council, voted to fast track plans for the roof and new wood gym floor. The idea is to get the roof fixed before laying a floor.

Board member Sammy Smith said the financials are just preliminary estimates.

"$50,000 for a major roof repair and $25,000 or $30,000 for a new gym floor. Those are figures from which we are beginning to work," Smith said.

Thursday's motion allows school system staff to seek bids for the roof and wooden gym floor for a target completion in 60 days. The board is scheduled to take up a detailed financial plan on the work at its February 19 meeting.

"I think by them able to work out the funds, it goes hand in hand, if they're going to put a new floor in, it's an excellent time to put a roof on the building," Harrison said.

While the roof is being replaced, students will be unable to use the gym. If needed, they'll use nearby school gyms.
