Slate wanted professional office use (RO) zoning for a tract on Lanier Avenue near the historic Riverside neighborhood.
"I believe that (RO) would be more appropriate than the existing (R-1) due to many factors including the adjacency to existing commercial properties," Slate said.
Eddie Hartness with the Riverside Commons Homeowners Association was opposed, arguing that the rezoning was too close to a residential area.
"We will lose not only a neighborhood which is one of the oldest in the city, but we will lose one of our prime recreation areas," Hartness said.
Hartness also told Council that approving the rezoning would cause growing commercial encroachment on Riverside.
