GAINESVILLE - Hall County authorities Monday confirmed one of two suspects wanted in a Gainesville shooting investigation was arrested over the weekend by authorities.

Deputy Nicole Bailes confirmed Ronta Antonio Garner, 33, of Lawrenceville, was arrested after he allegedly led deputies on a brief chase on a motorcycle around 1:10 a.m. Saturday.

They initially tried to pull him over for not wearing a helmet.

"The cyclist didn't stop, so a brief chase ensued with a call of assistance with Gainesville Police Department. The officers were able to apprehend the motorcyclist a few miles down the road," Bailes said.

The sheriff's office charged Garner with DUI alcohol, speeding, no license, no insurance, no tag, no helmet, failure to maintain lane, ran red light, obstruction (M) and fleeing and eluding. The initial stop was in the area of Interstate 985 at Mundy Mill Road, according to Bailes.

Gainesville Police this fall named Garner as one of two suspects in a shooting at Ridgecrest Apartments off Cleveland Highway Wednesday night, October 30.

Police said the male victim was shot in the abdomen and taken to Northeast Georgia Medical Center following the October shooting. Authorities did not release his name or condition at the time of the shooting.

Authorities said the second suspect is identified as Shamarcus Deunte Grimes, 26, also of Lawrenceville. Investigators earlier described Grimes as five feet nine and 175 pounds. At last check, he remained at large.

During the lookout in October, police said Garner was listed as a member of the 243 Bloods Gang. The original warrants for the suspects included aggravated battery, attempted robbery, aggravated assault, possession of a gun by a felon and possession of a gun during the commission of a crime.

Hall County Jail records list Garner as being held on charges of possession of a gun by a felon, possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime, aggravated assault and aggravated battery.
