Police say officers shot 30-year-old John Alan Massey on Friday morning in self-defense. Massey, who lived in Marietta, was dead on the scene at 2239 Powers Ferry Road in Atlanta.
The Department of Public Safety did not identify the officers involved in the shooting but said they have been placed on routine administrative leave.
According to the department, a preliminary internal investigation found that uniformed officers were investigating the circumstances of a stolen motorcycle found parked at an extended stay hotel.
The department's written explanation describes Massey as the perpetrator and states that he produced a handgun, leading an officer to fire his weapon.
The agency says the investigation is continuing.
