The website, which tracks gas prices across the county, says there "will indeed" be "huge swings and regional volatility" in 2014, but a GasBuddy analysis suggests that when all the final figures are calculated, the average price next year will fall by about 10 cents a gallon from this year's numbers. That would push the yearlong average below $3.40 for the first time since 2010 when motor fuel averaged $2.78 gal for the year.
Retail prices are expected to peak at an average of $3.83 gallon in the spring.
Georgia prices are expected to peak between $3.65 and $3.74 a gallon, the second-lowest range in the country. Among neighboring states, South Carolina, Tennessee and Alabama are among those with the lowest peak prices, while Florida is one of eight "lower 48" state that will have the highest peak prices of more than $4 a gallon.
The usual upside risks will still be present (U.S. refinery maintenance, storm threats, disruption in the Middle East and North Africa) but 2014 projects to be a year that will find more consistent downward pressure on U.S. prices than in any year since the Great Recession.
