Girls basketball: Big third quarter carries Chestatee past Lumpkin

GAINESVILLE -- Chestatee used a 18-8 third quarter to blow open a close game to take a 53-40 win over Lumpkin County Tuesday in Region 8-AAAA girls basketball action.

The Lady War Eagles (9-1) led 14-10 after the first quarter and took just a 28-24 lead into halftime. But behind Bridgette Kelly, Chestatee exploded in the third quarter to pull away for a 46-32 lead heading into the fourth quarter.

Kelly finished with 24 points to pace Chestatee. Kayla Watson added 11 points and Savanna Long had seven points for the Lady War Eagles.

Chestatee next will continue its defense of its 2012 Lanierland title on Friday taking on Lakeview Academy in the semifinals at the Lakeview gym. Tip-off is slated for 8:30 p.m.
