City spokeswoman Catiel Felts says the newly elected or re-elected members of the City Council will be sworn in at the same time.
"According to the new (city) Charter, the Mayor has to be sworn in prior to January 1," Felts explained. "The swearing-in usually occurs at the first Council Meeting of the year which would have been January 7."
Felts also said the mayor pro tem will still be elected by the Council but "will now serve two years." Currently, the term of that office is one year and has also been rotated among council members. The mayor's term under the new system is four years.
Felts also explained that with the "elected" Mayor, the mayor and six council members will now be referred to as "The Governing Body" or "the Mayor and Council." Right now, the group is simply referred to as the City Council.
This was the first year that the Mayor has been elected by popular vote. Previously, the post has rotated among city council members every two years.
