Gainesville officials consider property naming policy

GAINESVILLE - Gainesville officials are considering a policy directive that would formalize the process of how city property, including buildings and infrastructure, is named.

City Public Works Director David Dockery said it deals with naming things for the first time and re-naming.

"In general, in the wording of this policy, re-naming of any type of facility should be at first discouraged," Dockery said.

Among other things, he confirmed it that would help reduce burdens on businesses and residents when it comes to addresses, signage, stationery and websites. Those things change with name changes.

The city council discussed the proposal in Thursday's work session.

"This policy as it is written really relates more to buildings and infrastructure as opposed to park and rec operated facilities," Dockery said.

He said it allows a process for public involvement and notification and a committee that would ultimately make recommendations to the council on any naming considerations.
