GAINESVILLE - A man accused of injuring three people with a weapon authorities describe as a sword or machete was shot and wounded by a Hall County sheriff's deputy.

The incident occurred Sunday morning around 7:10 at a home in the 2000 block of Sailors Avenue. A Hall County Sheriff's Office spokesman said when deputies arrived, the three people had already been injured; there was no word on the extent of those injuries.

The suspect, a white male, 27-years-old, fled the Sailors Avenue residence and went to a house on Grant Street when he saw deputies. The deputies followed him to the Grant Street residence and demanded that he drop his weapon. Authorities said he refused, so deputies used non-lethal force to make him drop the weapon. They said when that failed, the suspect made an aggressive move toward deputies and the suspect was shot.

The injury to the suspect was non-life threatening, according to authorities. He was taken to the hospital, treated and then released to the Hall County Sheriff's Office.

At this point, authorities are not releasing the suspect's name, citing additional investigation.

The suspect faces initial charges of four counts of aggravated assault on a peace officer and one count of felony obstruction. Other charges are pending, according to authorities.

The deputy who fired on the suspect has been placed on routine administrative leave following the incident. The GBI has been called to investigate.
