A 60-page document from the team, obtained by The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, lays out the team's vision and timeline for constructing the new amenities. Like other Major League teams, the Braves are seeking to generate money outside the stadium, as well as inside it.
"Mixed-use proposals submitted in response ... should be tailored to enhance the fan experience and support the creation of a vibrant urban setting designed to complement the Atlanta Braves' business enterprise," according to the document prepared by the Braves' real estate adviser, Jones Lang LaSalle. The document invites responses from interested developers by Dec. 20.
Under the plan, about one-fourth of a 60-acre site near the Cumberland Mall would be dedicated to the stadium, leaving space for a mixed-use development. It would be centered along a pedestrian boulevard extending from Cobb Parkway to the ballpark.
Braves officials expect 700,000 to 1 million square feet of development in a first phase that would open with the new stadium in 2017.
"Our vision is to marry it all together, the stadium and the development, and create a destination that lives beyond just the 81 days a year of playing baseball," said Mike Plant, the Braves' executive vice president of business operations, said in an interview.
