Thursday night Miller instructed Police Chief David Spillers to get cost information on the readers, which enable patrolmen to instantly identify criminal suspects by tracing vehicle tag numbers.
"In conversations I've had with other law enforcement agencies and chiefs throughout the state, they say they've had quite a success with those tag readers," the mayor said. "With things like stolen cars and abducted children cases it's a way for police to patrol and get these high priority criminals off the street with minimal effort."
Council approved the purchase of Sprint AirCards for city police vehicle laptops, enabling officers to rapidly transmit ticket and citation information from their patrol cars to save time and money. Miller said the tag readers are expensive, as much as $20,000, but they could quickly pay for themselves with resulting forfeitures and drug money seizures.
"There are several businesses that provide these systems," Mayor Miller said. "You want to get the best bang for your buck, so Chief Spillers will investigate those different companies and report back to the city manager and find out which one makes the most sense for us economically."
