Powers, who has dominated the state and high school level, winning multiple state championships at North Hall and starring for the Splash Aquatic swim club, finished 11th overall in the 50 yard freestyle, touching the wall in 19.58 seconds.
At 18 years old, Powers was the youngest competitor to finish inside the top 16 -- though his weekend is far from finished.
Powers is entered to compete in the 100 yard backstroke, which will commence on Friday, and the 100 freestyle, which will take place on Saturday.
