Gwinnett RYDC to close

Posted 7:03PM on Thursday 5th December 2013 ( 10 years ago )
LAWRENCEVILLE - The Commissioner of the Georgia Department of Juvenile Justice (DJJ) announced Thursday that the department plans to close its Regional Youth Detention Center in Gwinnett County.

Commissioner Avery Niles noted that the building was built 30 years ago. He said officials foresee infrastructure breakdowns in the facility, and it's time for a contingency plan.

Niles plans for juvenile offenders from the southern half of Gwinnett to transfer to the remodeled Rockdale RYDC. Offenders from Hall and northern Gwinnett County will go to the RYDC in Gainesville.

The closing isn't expected to be complete until June of next year. Niles said the department will help center employees in Gwinnett find employment in other department facilities.

"I'm here to assure you that DJJ is committed to this RYDC Staff because this staff is committed to the DJJ mission. We need experienced professionals like you and we will continue to work together on the DJJ Team to serve the needs of these youth entrusted to our custody and care," Niles said.

Department officials expect to hold monthly meetings with Gwinnett County officials and other local stakeholders in January, to begin the transition plans.
