ATLANTA - The man who died in a plane crash in Dawson County Monday night was a doctor at Emory Midtown Hospital, officials confirmed.

According to Fox 5, Dr. John Culbertson was a reconstructive surgeon and a professor at Emory University.

The Piper Malibu went down about 7:30 p.m. behind a house on Auraria Road. Culbertson was piloting the plane. No one else was on board.

The flight was headed from Morristown, New Jersey Municipal Airport to DeKalb Peachtree Airport when the crash occurred.

Investigators with the National Transportation Safety Board were trying to determine potential causes of the crash, such as if the crash was due to human or mechanical failure, or if weather was a factor.

While the final report on the crash could take up to a year, a preliminary version is expected within the next week.
