Among those students were six children from the Art Academy, a weekly art program hosted by the GHA and the Quinlan Visual Arts Center, based at GHA's Davis Street community center.
The two programs focus on teaching public housing children creative problem solving as a life skill. "We need to awaken talents in these kids, so they can use them for a lifetime of creative achievement," said Awaken program coordinator Jananne Waller, a volunteer from Free Chapel, and also a certified K-12 educator, Reading Specialist and previous collegiate adjunct instructor.
Waller and her team of 15 volunteers meet weekly with Awaken students, studying art and other school subjects.
Mary Hull, artist, teacher and owner of Pen Dragon Art Supplies, leads the Art Academy program, and is assisted by Vivian Young, a Quinlan volunteer and retired Hall County Schools teacher.
Waller and Free Chapel Outreach Pastor Michael Thurmond planned and coordinated the trip. Gainesville City Schools provided the transportation.
