GAINESVILLE - The funeral will be held Monday for Cheryl Hinderscheid of Gainesville, a woman who left her mark on the community through her numerous civic activities.

Hinderscheid, 66, a native of Gainesville, graduated from Gainesville High School and attended Brenau College (now Brenau University) before graduating with a degree in education from the University of Southwestern Louisiana.

For a number of years she pursued a career in education, but began to develop a long-lasting role in community affairs through the lives of her children and the activities they were involved with.

Several years ago the concession stand in the school gymnasium was named in honor of her and her late husband, Bill Hinderscheid. She was a fixture at most sporting events at Lakeview Academy and helped start and coach the school's tennis team there.

Mrs. Hinderscheid's love of gardening is also on display in the community. She served in various positions, including president of the Crabapple Garden Club, and helped start a junior garden club at Enota Elementary School. She was also a member of the Gainesville Garden Club council and an advocate for a city-wide beautification program, the enhancement and beautification of Gainesville's public parks and was supportive of the Adopt-a-Park program.

The garden area in from of the Gainesville Civic Center was a creation of hers and combined with two of her passions, gardening and the Gainesville Parks and Recreation program where she served on the board of directors from 1987 until her death. She served in various capacities on the Parks and Recreation Board, including chairman on two different occasions. She attended her last board meeting when the board convened at her home during the time of her illness. She was honored for her dedication and service to the Gainesville Parks and Recreation Board with the 2003 Georgia Recreation and Parks Association Volunteer of the Year award. In 2006 the City of Gainesville recognized her service with an Outstanding Citizen Award.

When it was announced that some of the 1996 Olympics events would be held on Lake Lanier, Mrs. Hinderscheid stepped forward to head the massive undertaking of coordinating volunteers who would help with them. When the 2003 World Canoe/Kayak Championships came to the Lake Lanier Olympics venue, she again stepped forth and served as the vendor coordinator for the event and when the Georgia Special Olympics were held in Gainesville in 2002, she was a volunteer in those games as well.

Mrs. Hinderscheid also served with numerous other organizations in Gainesville, including the Hall County Humane Society, the Junior League, Campfire Boys & Girls and Cub Scouts.

The funeral will be at 4:00 Monday at Grace Episcopal Church in Gainesville.
