The Rare Life Award nominees include, according to the sponsor's website, some nominees are heroic, so who are inspirational, and some who just make an impact in their corner of the world. But all have one thing in common. The website invites views to read their stories, vote on the ones that inspire you, and share them with friends.
Faye Bush of Gainesville currently serves as the volunteer Executive Director of the Newtown Florist Club, which as most people in Gainesville know, despite its name is not a florist shop but a small group of mostly African-American women in their 60s, 70s, and 80s who fight constantly to clean up their neighborhood from environmental contaminates.
For 63 years, the Newtown Florist Club has brought flowers, food and other support to families of the sick and dying in their African American corner of Gainesville. In 1990, they started wondering why they were always so busy.
Bush, who is 78, got involved because she saw her family and friends dying and she wanted to make a difference. (Read more of her story by clicking on the link below. At the end of the voting, seven finalists will be selected from the top 20 nominees. One of them will be chosen as the Grand Prize 2014 Rare Life Award winner.
The $40,000 grand prize will be donated by Eagle Rare Single Barrel Bourbon Whiskey, the sponsor, in his/her name to the charity of his/her choice. Eagle Rare will also host a local award reception for the Grand Prize award winner.
Eagle Rare will also donate $4,000 to the six other finalists charities' of choice in their name.
