Four GOP candidates, three from Cherokee County, signed papers to run for State House District 22. Meagan Biello, Jeff Duncan and Sam Moore are all from Ball Ground. Nate Cochran is from Alpharetta.
District 22 includes portions of Forsyth, Cherokee and Fulton counties.
Calvin Hill of Canton held the seat until his death Oct. 30, three months after being diagnosed with a precursor to leukemia which, family members said, progressed quickly.
The other special election is for House District 2, which includes portions of Catoosa, Walker and Whitfield Counties.
Three Republicans filed paperwork to run. They are Neal Florence of La Fayette, Steve Tarvin of Chickamauga and Doug Woodruff of Ringgold.
House District 2 opened up when Jay Neal of LaFayette stepped down after being named earlier this month by Gov. Nathan Deal to be executive director of the state's Office of Transition, Support and Re-entry.
The elections are non-partisan with no party primaries. However, each candidate's party affiliation will be listed on the ballot. Run-off elections, if needed, will be held on Tuesday, Feb. 4.
The voter registration deadline for the special elections is Dec. 9. The election date is Jan. 7.
