Gainesville city to get new welcome signs

Posted 8:58AM on Saturday 16th November 2013 ( 10 years ago )
GAINESVILLE - Starting this weekend motorists entering Gainesville City limits can expect to see new welcome signs.

At its work session earlier this week the Gainesville City Council saw a prototype of the sign, and it will be hard to miss.

Over four feet wide, it's deep red with large white letters proclaiming the Gainesville High School Red Elephants as 2012 state football champions.

City Manager Kip Padgett unveiled the sign saying, "When you go through some of these areas like Buford and Jackson County, you see 'Welcome to the City of Buford - home of the State Champion Football Team' and so we got together with our sign shop and they came up with this."

Spontaneous cheers, hoots and woof-woofs sounded from unnamed City Council members, apparently an indication of their approval.

"We've already shared it with the school board. Dr. Dyer (Superintendent Merrianne Dyer) is on board with it. It's going to be put on our right of way," Padgett added.

"Hopefully this will be temporary and we can add 2013!"
