MACON, Ga. (AP) Macon police say they've arrested a woman and charged her with animal cruelty after a break-in at a central Georgia animal shelter that led to deadly dog fights.

Police say 36-year-old Crystal Gale Fessler of Macon faces 13 counts of cruelty to animals and is also accused of criminal trespass. Jail records do not list an attorney for Fessler.

Police have said that someone let about 40 dogs out of their cages during the early morning hours of Oct. 17 at the All About Animals Shelter in Macon. Investigators say that led to dog fights which left three dogs dead and others severely wounded.

A motive in the case remained a mystery.

Mendy Harrison, a volunteer at the shelter, says workers there were seeking answers about why the break-in happened.
