DAWSONVILLE - The Georgia State Patrol has filed charges against the 16-year-old driver involved in a fatal June 10 crash that killed the girl riding on the roof of a car.

Troopers filed charges of first degree homicide by vehicle, reckless driving, too fast for conditions and driving in violation of license restrictions in Dawson County Juvenile Court Wednesday.

The victim, 16-year-old Anna Gabrielle Hawkins of Dawsonville was killed in the accident.

According to the state patrol, Hawkins was on the roof of a Suzuki Grand Vitara when the driver lost control in a curve while heading south on Couch Road. Troopers said the SUV crossed into the northbound lane, left the road and hit an embankment. Authorities responded to the crash around 9:42 p.m.

The Tuesday following the wreck, Trooper First Class Mark Cox said the driver, from Cumming, told investigators she and the victim were best friends. The driver was not seriously hurt.

Since the driver is a juvenile facing charges, the state patrol did not release her name.
