Organizers note that hunger continues to be a pervasive problem in Gainesville-Hall County, particularly with budget cuts affecting many of our local programs aimed at fighting hunger. This project focused on fundraising and a hands-on effort by partnering with the Georgia Mountain Food Bank.
Between October 10 and November 7, the class raised $1,500 to purchase 200 birds/hens and canned goods for complete Thanksgiving dinners.
"As a Food Bank board member, I am aware of the problem we face locally with hunger," said Clay Pilgrim, CPA, a partner with Rushton & Company and program coordinator for the 2014 class of Leadership Hall. "While we still have a long way to go, my hope is that our efforts with Leadership Hall will help make sure that no one in our community goes hungry on Thanksgiving Day."
Georgia Mountain Food Bank Executive Director Kay Blackstock led the volunteer effort of compiling food items into 200 dinners, including: cranberry sauce; stuffing mix; turkey gravy packet; coffee; fruit; three cans of vegetables plus the 200 birds.
Leadership volunteers will sort the meals and set up a Mobile Pantry Distribution to deliver the boxes on November 21 to 200 needy families.
