Area schools excel, some need help per DOE list

ATLANTA - The Georgia Department of Education (GaDOE) Tuesday released the list of 2013 Reward and Alert Schools as part of the state's waiver from the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA).

A number of schools in the ten-county region surrounding Hall County are on the lists.

Reward Schools fall into two categories - Highest Performing Schools and High Progress Schools.

According to the GaDOE, a "Highest-Performing School" is a Title I school among the 5% of Title I schools in Georgia that has the highest absolute performance over three years for the "all students" group on the statewide assessments.

Schools in the region classified as "Highest Performing" for 2013 are:

~Banks County Middle School (BANKS COUNTY)
~Cumming Elementary School (FORSYTH COUNTY)
~Otwell Middle School (FORSYTH COUNTY)
~Little Mill Middle School (FORSYTH COUNTY)
~Hazel Grove Elementary School (HABERSHAM COUNTY)
~East Jackson Elementary School (JACKSON COUNTY)
~West Jackson Elementary School (JACKSON COUNTY)
~Benton Elementary School (JACKSON COUNTY)
~North Jackson Elementary School (JACKSON COUNTY)
~White County Intermediate (WHITE COUNTY)
~Mt. Yonah Elementary School (WHITE COUNTY)
~Commerce Elementary School (COMMERCE CITY)


A "High-Progress School" is a Title I school among the 10% of Title I schools in the State that is making the most progress in improving the performance of the "all students" group over three years on the statewide assessments.

Schools in the region classified as "High Progress" for 2013 are:

~Banks County Elementary School (BANKS COUNTY)
~Apalachee High School (BARROW COUNTY)
~East Hall Middle School (HALL COUNTY)
~Buford Middle School (BUFORD MIDDLE SCHOOL)
~New Holland Core Knowledge Academy (GAINESVILLE CITY)
~Gainesville Exploration Academy (GAINESVILLE CITY)

In addition, three Hall County schools were placed on the state Alert Schools list. Lanier Charter Career Academy was flagged under a "Graduation Alert" and White Sulphur Elementary and Oakwood Elementary were tagged under the "Subgroup Alert."

"Graduation Alert" means that the graduation rate is below 3 standard deviations from the mean of the state's subgroups' graduation rate; "Subgroup Alert" means the achievement rate is below 3 standard deviations from the mean of the state's subgroups' meets and exceeds rate.
